5 Church Website Mistakes That Are Costing You Visitors
Your website might be driving people away before they ever walk through your doors.
Someone in your community just Googled "churches near me."
They found you. They clicked. They landed on your website.
And within 3 seconds, they left.
What happened?
Probably one of these five mistakes. Let's fix them.
Mistake #1: Service Times Are Buried
The Problem
The #1 thing visitors want to know: When can I show up? If they have to hunt for it, they won't.
I've seen church websites where service times are on a separate "About" page, buried in a paragraph of text, or worst of all — not listed at all.
This is like a restaurant hiding their hours. People will just go somewhere else.
The Fix
Service times should be visible on your homepage without scrolling. Big. Bold. Impossible to miss. "Sunday 10:00 AM" — that's it.
Mistake #2: No Clear Address
The Problem
You'd be shocked how many church websites don't show a physical address on the homepage. Some only have it in the footer. Some don't have it at all.
First-time visitors need to know where you are. If they can't find it in 5 seconds, they're gone.
The Fix
Address on the homepage. Linked to Google Maps. Bonus: add a "Get Directions" button that opens their phone's navigation app.
Mistake #3: Outdated Information
The Problem
"Join us for our Easter 2023 service!" It's now 2026. That event banner has been there for 3 years.
Nothing says "we don't care" like outdated content. It makes visitors wonder if the church is even still active.
The Fix
Remove dated content or set calendar reminders to update it. Better yet: use evergreen content that doesn't expire. "Join us this Sunday" works forever.
Mistake #4: Not Mobile-Friendly
The Problem
60%+ of your visitors are on phones. If your site doesn't work on mobile, you're invisible to more than half of potential visitors.
Tiny text. Buttons too small to tap. Horizontal scrolling. All of these send mobile visitors running.
The Fix
Test your site on your phone right now. Can you find service times in under 5 seconds? Can you tap the phone number to call? If not, it's time for a redesign.
Mistake #5: No Clear Next Step
The Problem
Someone lands on your site. They're interested. Now what? If you don't tell them what to do next, they'll do nothing.
Most church websites are passive. They display information but don't invite action.
The Fix
Add a clear call-to-action: "Plan Your Visit" or "What to Expect Sunday." Make it a button. Make it obvious. Guide them to the next step.
The 5-Second Test
Here's how to test your church website right now:
- Open your site on your phone
- Set a 5-second timer
- Can you find: Service time + Address + What to do next?
If the answer is no, you're losing visitors.
